soon after leaving Slough there was a stand off with the police over some marchers insisting on their right to march in the road - this seemed to involve more police than we would have needed to escort us as the met had done - however it seems to be Thames Valley policy even with the annual British Legion parade - either pay for a road closure or no marching in the road *

When marching on the towpath I'd told a old-timer canal boater why we were doing so and his comment was, 'that's ridiculous, it's getting more & more like a police state'

in the event most marchers cooperated with the stewards' request to walk on the pavement but a few individualists did stick to their opinion by walking in the road - the stewards were very worried about the marchers safety all praise to them for that but there are human rights issues here with more & more restrictions on the right to demomnstrate e.g at Fairford during the Iraq war *

when people were getting weary we'd hear in the distance the sound of the Sheffield Samba Band - & that meant one thing, we were getting near a stop - & spirits instantly lifted *
