A confusing sign when coming from the north - you go through the gate but then double back under the bridge *

here, they and their family heading up towards Woodhead. I'd gone for a demonstration to keep the modern 1954 tunnel available for the return of the railway (the National Grid want to shove cables through it) but 2 miles along my tyre split so I had to push my bike back to Hadfield station.

or looked up and seen this fan in the base of the bridge carrying the M65 over NCN 68 near Barrowford locks
I hate motorways but I do find this quite aestetically pleasing; I just wish the cars were gone and it had a multi-lane cycleway instead. As with all motorways you have that horrible noisy drone for several miles either side, uugh!

and another reflection in the same bridge.
Fortunately heading north you soon get away from the background drone and enter the tranquility of the mile tunnel valley though that too is threatened by a by-pass; will they never learn? Bring back the Skipton - Colne railway instead, the occasional noise of a train only briefly effects the tranquillity of otherwise quiet countryside, a by-pass wrecks it.

From Slack, just above Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall, you're given the choice of two alternative routes for NCN68. On this side the old milestone shows the way to Burnley (did you notice the missing 'e'?)

when I retired from my job as a youth and community worker in December 2005 I was awarded a long-sevice award by my employer. I was given £200 which had to be spent on an object. Not being into the consumer society (my idea of a big spend is half a dozen books from a charity shop), there was nothing I wanted. So I arranged for it to be given to the local council for a bench on a cyclepath. Over 4 years on my bench is finally in place, above the south entrance of the mile tunnel at Foulridge. *
