After 18 months at Victorian Goodmayes Infants School (memories eat your cabbage! & outside loos), I moved to a newly built Primary School, Barley Lane where I spent many happy years until it was time to go up to Grammar School.
My first memory there was when the register was called and I answered, the teacher responded, 'Another Scruffy one!' - I had been preceeded by two of my brothers.
And as if to echo it, see the rubber stamp applied to the work above. *

In the first year I was made to write out again my general science homework because I managed to blot it every time - I struggled with fountain pens and it was before Biros came into use.

they did set some interesting (looking back) topics for English homework in my fist year: 'My friend', 'the dinner hour', 'how to make school better','New years Resolutions', What I will do when I leave School' and here 'If I won a thousand pounds' *

during my last years in school I joined Ilford CND which became more radical as Ilford Committee of 100 and then transformed more radically still into Ilford Libertarian Group and soon after leaving school we were outside the gates leafletting the pupils in 'do it yourself schooling' - if it's too small to read , use your view button to zoom in
