on reframing a picture, imagine our joy when we discovered that a Victorian newspaper had been used for padding. It was the Todmorden and District News of Friday, March 15th, 1878 (the same year as the previous photo), price 1d.

it had been sent to a subscriber in Barrowford, a Mrs Alice Uttley of Higher Causeway. 5 minutes research of the 1881 census told me she was a 55 year old widower whose income was from land and railway.
